Studying abroad was a dream I had since I was a child. The idea of stepping into foreign lands, studying in world-renowned universities, and immersing myself in cultures beyond my own felt like an enchanting adventure. But for the longest time, that dream felt impossibly out of reach.

During high school, I would spend hours researching study-abroad opportunities, imagining myself as part of an international academic community. However, the reality hit hard—the financial burden of studying overseas without a scholarship and the intensely competitive nature of scholarship applications made it seem unattainable.

When I entered college at Universitas Diponegoro’s Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP UNDIP), that dream stayed with me but faded into the background. I convinced myself that it was too far-fetched, just a fantasy that would remain tucked away in my heart. Little did I know, life was about to surprise me in the most extraordinary way.

The Spark That Ignited My Ambition

Everything changed when I heard about the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA)—a prestigious, fully-funded scholarship program by the Indonesian government. IISMA offers undergraduate students the chance to study abroad for one semester at top universities around the world.

Hearing about IISMA rekindled my long-forgotten ambition to study abroad. This program felt like the golden ticket I had been waiting for. It wasn’t just a chance to fulfil my childhood dream; it was a path to academic excellence, cultural exchange, and personal growth.

The Challenges and Triumphs of the Application Process

When the IISMA registration opened, I was in the middle of an internship. Balancing the demands of work with the meticulous application process was daunting. My days became a tightrope act— studying for my English proficiency test during lunch breaks and at night, preparing documents every time I could and sometimes late into the night, and juggling internship responsibilities all at once.

The registration process was rigorous and complex. From understanding the timeline to compiling the required documents and selecting potential host universities, there was so much to do. At times, I felt overwhelmed, but I wasn’t alone.

My lecturers at FISIP UNDIP were my guiding lights. They offered invaluable advice on navigating the selection process and cheered me on when I doubted myself. The department even held an online session to break down the program details, making the process clearer and less intimidating. The faculty went above and beyond to support me, ensuring that my documents were complete and submitted on time.

Finally, after weeks and months of hard work, the moment I had dreamed of arrived—I was selected as an IISMA awardee to study at the University of California, Davis. When I opened the IISMA website and saw that I was accepted, I could hardly believe it. Studying abroad, something I once thought was beyond my reach, was now a reality.

FISIP UNDIP’s Unwavering Support

FISIP UNDIP didn’t just stop at helping me through the selection process. After the announcement, the dean personally congratulated all of the students accepted into the IISMA program, recognizing our achievements in a way that felt deeply meaningful.

To prepare us for our journey, UNDIP organized pre-departure sessions with past IISMA alumni. These sessions were filled with practical advice on how to make the most of the experience, from navigating cultural differences to excelling academically abroad.

Before I departed, I also had the opportunity to give back by sharing tips and advice for IISMA hopefuls through FISIP UNDIP’s social media platforms. It was my way of expressing gratitude for the immense support I had received and inspiring others to chase their dreams just as I had.

Living the Dream at UC Davis

Arriving at the University of California, Davis, felt like stepping into a whole new world. UC Davis is renowned for its academic excellence, commitment to sustainability, and vibrant campus life. Studying here was a dream come true.

The professors were world-class, offering insights that challenged me to think critically and creatively. The diverse student community introduced me to people from all corners of the globe, each with unique perspectives and stories to share. These interactions broadened my horizons and helped me grow not just as a student but as a global citizen.

Outside the classroom, I embraced every opportunity to explore. From participating in cultural events to travelling across iconic American landmarks, every moment was a chance to learn and grow.

Finding Purpose Through Experience

My time at UC Davis wasn’t just about academic achievement—it was about discovering my purpose. Being in a country with advanced infrastructure, efficient systems, and a culture of innovation made me reflect deeply on the potential of Indonesia.

I realized that our country is brimming with untapped opportunities, from its rich natural resources to the talents of its people. But to unlock this potential, Indonesia needs young leaders willing to think boldly, innovate, and drive meaningful change.

This realization fueled my desire to give back. I dream of becoming an ambassador of knowledge, using what I’ve learned to inspire and empower the next generation. I want to show others that the impossible can become possible with determination, support, and a clear vision.

A Message to Aspiring Dreamers

To every student in Indonesia who dreams of studying abroad, I have one message for you: Don’t give up. Be brave, and let your dreams guide you.

Your dreams are not just wishes—they are the compass that leads you toward your true potential. The journey may be challenging, but every step, every late-night effort, and every setback will be worth it.

Thanks to IISMA, FISIP UNDIP, and the unwavering support of my lecturers and peers, I turned my dream into reality. Studying abroad has changed my life, not just academically but personally, and I am forever grateful for this transformative experience.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that no dream is too big when you dare to pursue it. So, take that leap of faith, and let your dreams carry you to places you’ve never imagined.
