Semarang, October 8, 2025 — The Communication Science Department of FISIP UNDIP, under the Academic Expertise Cluster of Media Sociology, held a international public lecture titled “Communication in Turbulence: An Insight from Exxon Papua New Guinea” at the FISIP UNDIP Theater Room. The event featured Marilyn Wingi, Upstream Community Affairs Manager at ExxonMobil Papua New Guinea LNG (PNG LNG), as the keynote speaker.
The session began with remarks from Dr. Agus Naryoso, S.Sos., M.Si., Head of the Communication Science Department, who highlighted the importance of understanding the critical nature of crisis communication.
“Students need to grasp the essence of communication in turbulence. I hope they will gain valuable knowledge to prepare them for their future careers,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Dean of FISIP UNDIP, Dr. Drs. Teguh Yuwono, M.Pol.Admin., expressed his appreciation for the international guest speaker.
“We hope Marilyn Wingi will share her knowledge and experiences with our students, and we also look forward to continuous collaboration in the future,” he remarked.
In her presentation, Marilyn Wingi shared her extensive experiences in managing community relations, crises, and cultural dynamics in Papua New Guinea. She emphasized the need to understand local culture, build trust before crises occur, and approach community relations with empathy.
“The best way to overcome a crisis is to avoid it altogether through thorough preparation,” she stressed.

The session was moderated by Dr. Phil. Nuriyatul Lailiyah, lecturer of Communication Science FISIP UNDIP, with Shafa Sylvia Rahma serving as the MC. The discussion was highly interactive, with students enthusiastically engaging on topics such as crisis management, community engagement, and cross-cultural communication strategies.
This international public lecture provided FISIP UNDIP Communication Science students with practical insights into crisis management in the energy sector, as well as a deeper understanding of the role of cross-cultural communication in today’s globalized world. (Muhammad Rif’at Al-Razi)***
