Semarang, May 5, 2025 – The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) held a World-Class Study Program Public Lecture titled “Communication for Social Change & Qualitative Communication Research Methodology,” featuring Jonathan Davis Smith, a researcher from the University of Leeds. The event took place in the PKM Hall of FISIP UNDIP.
The public lecture was attended by dozens of undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as academics from the Communication Science Study Program at FISIP UNDIP. Nuriyatul Lailiyah, a lecturer in Communication Science at FISIP UNDIP, facilitated the discussion. The topics covered included the role of communication in driving social change and qualitative approaches in communication research. The session aimed to broaden students’ perspectives on global communication research practices and methodologies.
The lecture began with a presentation on the critical role of communication, particularly social media, in fostering social change. Jonathan Davis Smith emphasized that these two aspects are key to ensuring that communication for social change is well-received by local populations.
Beyond the presentation, the event encouraged students to actively participate in discussions on publishing social phenomena through unique digital approaches. Students were invited to share their perspectives on current social issues and recount relevant personal experiences related to the topics discussed. The session not only sparked enthusiasm among students but also prompted engaged academics to contribute their insights and questions.
The public lecture, “Communication for Social Change & Qualitative Communication Research Methodology,” demonstrated FISIP UNDIP’s commitment to providing students and academics with opportunities to gain insights from new international perspectives by featuring globally recognized experts in their fields. This event is expected to deepen students’ understanding, equipping them with valuable knowledge for future contributions in both academic and non-academic endeavors.
