Vienna, Austria — Nuriyatul Lailiyah, S.Sos., M.I.Kom., a lecturer in Communication Science at Universitas Diponegoro, served as a speaker at the international event Dialogue Perspectives: Vienna Citizen Lab 2025, held from May 11–14, 2025, in Vienna, Austria. The event was part of the European Union’s TWON (Twin of Online Social Networks) project, which focuses on studying the impact of social media on democracy and digital policy development.

Among 30 selected participants from various European countries, Nuri—as she is familiarly known—delivered a presentation titled Social Media, AI, Disinformation, and Freedom of Speech. She elaborated on how social media algorithms amplify the spread of problematic content, such as misinformation and hate speech, as well as the challenges posed by moderation systems that lack sufficient accountability. She also emphasised the importance of contextual, community-based digital literacy approaches, particularly for young users and vulnerable groups.

This participation not only brings individual pride but also directly contributes to the development of international programs within the Department of Communication Science. In her activity proposal, Nuri mentioned that this forum served as a networking platform to invite international speakers and participants for an upcoming short course titled “Responsible AI in the Global South,” which will be organised by the Department of Communication Science at FISIP Undip later this year.

Through this engagement, the Department of Communication Science at FISIP Undip further solidifies its position as an institution actively involved in global issues, such as digital media, artificial intelligence, and online democracy. It is hoped that this will lead to more academic collaborations and practices that elevate the department’s reputation on the international stage. (Rif’at)
