Semarang, May 5, 2025 – FISIP UNDIP held a Public Lecture under the World Class Study Program with the theme “Communication for Social Change & Qualitative Communication Research Methodology”, featuring Jonathan Davis Smith, a researcher from the University of Leeds. The event took place at the PKM Auditorium of FISIP UNDIP.
The lecture was attended by dozens of undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as academic staff from the Communication Science Study Program at FISIP UNDIP. Nuriyatul Lailiyah, a lecturer in Communication Science at FISIP UNDIP, moderated the discussion. The session focused on the role of communication in driving social change and on qualitative approaches in communication research. The lecture aimed to broaden students’ understanding of global communication practices and research methodologies.
The event began with a presentation on the vital role of communication—especially social media—in fostering change. It also emphasized the importance of integrating religion and local culture into communication processes with the public. Jonathan Davis Smith highlighted that these two aspects are essential for ensuring that social change communication is well received by local communities.
Beyond the material presented, the lecture encouraged students to actively participate in discussion forums that explored the publication of social phenomena through unique approaches on digital platforms. Students were invited to share their views on the social issues being discussed and to relate personal experiences relevant to the topic. The event sparked lively engagement, not only from students but also from faculty members who enthusiastically contributed their questions and perspectives.
The public lecture on “Communication for Social Change & Qualitative Communication Research Methodology” showcased FISIP UNDIP’s commitment to providing students and academics with valuable insights from diverse international perspectives by inviting competent global scholars in the field. This initiative is expected to deepen students’ understanding and equip them with the knowledge needed to contribute meaningfully in both academic and non-academic realms in the future.
