Nasya Alyalina Dita, a representative of the Community Service Program (KKN) students from Universitas Diponegoro (Undip), has taken the initiative to educate the residents of Ketoyan Village, Wonosegoro District, Boyolali Regency, on the importance of plastic waste management. This program also addresses the dangers of burning waste, which remains the primary method used by the community for waste disposal.
The awareness campaign was attended by over 30 participants, including representatives from the Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK) group from four hamlets: Gagatan, Ketoyan, Seworan, and Tempel. The event was held at the Ketoyan Village Hall. The students encouraged the PKK members to successfully implement the 6th key PKK program, which focuses on education and skills development, through a plastic recycling initiative that transforms waste into decorative items with marketable value.
The participants were divided into three groups, receiving direct guidance and hands-on practice led by the Undip KKN students. The primary activity of this campaign involved processing plastic waste into decorative flowers that could be displayed and sold. The process of making the plastic flowers is relatively simple; participants only need to use plastic bags, glue, and wire. These materials are then shaped into flowers and placed in used plastic bottles, which are weighted with stones to ensure stability. All finished vases and colourful flowers could be taken home as household decorations.
The PKK members showed great enthusiasm and excitement in creating plastic waste crafts they had brought from home. In addition to raising awareness about the dangers of plastic waste, this campaign also served as a means of fostering connections between PKK groups from different hamlets in Ketoyan Village.
This program has also inspired the organization of similar training sessions in each hamlet, with the hope that the knowledge shared will be beneficial, sustainable, and further developed as an effort to utilize unused plastic waste.***
