The IISMA (Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards) awardees at the University of Auckland held a special event on 18 August 2024. The event was part of our efforts to introduce Indonesian culture to the local Auckland community. The event took place at Te Tirohanga O Te Tōangaroa. We started with a food donation to a homeless shelter in Auckland City, followed by a cultural event called “Symphony of Independence: Merdeka Cafe.” The event offered free Indonesian food, snacks, and drinks, along with traditional games and souvenirs.
Our main objectives were to benefit the local community, introduce Indonesian culture, and create a sense of togetherness and independence with our friends in Auckland. The event went very well, attracting more than 60 participants from various countries, including students from Massey University, AUT, and other universities. This cultural exchange provided an opportunity for the participants to learn about Indonesia’s cultural heritage, especially its meaning in the celebration of national days such as Independence Day, Batik Day, and Heroes’ Day.
One of the participants, Nico, a student at the University of Auckland, expressed his excitement about the event, saying, “100 out of 10! The food was amazing! The atmosphere… amazing! No notes, lots of fun, lots of positive energy. Thank you so much!” She also gave a special thank-you note, showing how much she appreciated all of our efforts in making the event enjoyable for everyone.
The IISMA programme, organised by the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, has allowed us to gain global experience. Through this event, we were able to share stories about Indonesian culture and heritage. This event is not only a celebration of Indonesia’s rich culture but also an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between Indonesian students and our international friends. We hope this event has a positive impact on the local community and helps our friends from different backgrounds to learn more about Indonesian culture.***
