Semarang – Dr. Desi Dwi Piranti is a lecturer at Universitas Brawijaya and also alumni of Communication Science Diponegoro University. Desi talked about many things, starting from her interest in being a teacher since she was a child, until later finding an interest in the field of Communication Studies in last Webinar with the theme of Communication Carrier Choice in Research and Academia that was held by the Undip’s Bachelor of Communication Studies Program has been going on smoothly last Saturday (21/11).
“During college, I felt a love for Communication Science because it is a science that we practice every day and can reflect in our daily life,” said Desi.
As young people in general when they graduate with a bachelor’s degree, Desi applied for jobs in various large companies, such as Trans TV, LIPI, and Brawijaya University. She was finally accepted as one of the lecturers at Brawijaya University with a bachelor’s degree diploma. During her time as a lecturer at Brawijaya University, Desi said that she saw a polarization between the world of practitioners and the world of academia.
Desi’s curiosity in the world of practitioners and academics encouraged her to continue her master’s studies by looking for various scholarships. However, looking for a scholarship was not easy, she tried many times, even Desi failed many times until finally, she managed to get a scholarship at a university in the Netherlands. She was very interested in continuing her studies in the Netherlands to find out whether an academic could not master the world of practitioners. It turned out that while studying in the Netherlands, Desi found that the polarization between practitioners and academics was not too big.
“When I was in the Netherlands, I found that the polarization between practitioners and academics was not that big. To become a practitioner requires academic skills because the ability to understand theory in communication is very necessary, ” she said.
Desi also talked about her doctoral study in the field of Philosophical Culture which was also taken in the Netherlands. This choice was not without reason, she said that she was attracted to Philosophical Culture because of her personal experiences while in Indonesia, especially regarding the sometimes unfair assumptions of Indonesians. In addition, Desi also wants what she learns to help Indonesians think about other alternatives regarding social reality. During her doctorate, Desi learned many things and also gained many valuable experiences.
At the end of the presentation, Desi gave was closed with a message for the students who attended the webinar.
“Do not waste time in college, in the sense that lecture is a process of gaining as much knowledge as possible because time will not come back again. There is no waste of knowledge, all will be used,” she concluded.
